Åkrahällskolan is the only upper secondary school in the small town of Nybro, which means that we have a great social diversity of students (age 16-19). However, since the community is mainly supported by industries (also facing an increased unemployment), this shows in the social background of our students, as well as the fact that we have a large group of immigrants from the middle ast and Somalia. For our community as well as our school it is vital to inspire our young people to fullfill their potential both with studies, jobs and to be able to be a part of a larger world as an european citizen. We also wan´t to involve our newly arrived citizens to get involved in the swedish and european society. Not at least it is important in our case since researches show that immigrants, children to immigrants as well as children to industrial workers are less likely to go to university and to get involved in the european society. We want to show our young people how to mix with people with different cultures, language and experience and to open up the world.
